Does it always feel like you are struggling with household chores? As a mom, I can relate to struggling to keep things neat and tidy. With a toddler, it feels like you’re cleaning up a mess while another one is being made.

In this post, I’ll show you the 11 simple household chores I swear by to keep my house clean and maintain its cleanliness. For my myself, I need a neat and tidy home, it makes me feel so much better. But I cannot spend hours a day cleaning.ย

This post is all about household chores to keep your home clean.

Household Chores List

Before we get into the 11 simple household chores, let’s get organized! One of the biggest things I recommend is having a household chores list.

One of the things that can feel overwhelming, especially with chores, is when they start to pile up. Having a schedule and, more importantly, sticking to it will alleviate you of the cleaning dread.

Often, we spend more time thinking about our chores than the time it takes to do them. When you break down the household chore list daily, weekly, and monthly, things become easier as you have a clear picture of what needs to be done and when!

Please check out the household chores list above. You can print off the PDF if you prefer a hard copy. I have a blank one or you can use my filled-out version below!ย This keeps my home clean and organized with minimal effort and time.

You need to do things daily to prevent chores from piling up. If you’re not accustomed to doing daily tasks, this will be an adjustment, but it’s worth it.

11 Simple Household Chores

Now, here is the list of 11 simple household chores you can do daily to have a neat and tidy home. Follow this list daily to relieve yourself from stress and worry about incomplete home chores.

These housekeeping tips are straightforward and require little time. Doing these tasks daily will make your home look great and give you a sense of pride.

1. Make Your Bed Every Day

One of the easiest home chores is making your bed. Making your bed every day sets an intention to be productive that day.

If you aren’t already making your bed and you have a million throw pillows and blankets, I suggest minimizing your bedding to keep it easy to make in the morning.

One of the easiest ways to reduce your bedding is to stop using loose-fitting sheets. A duvet cover that can be removed and a fitted sheet is all you need. This is also a great tip if you have kids who are old enough to make their bed, as it will be easy for them to do so.

2. One Load of Laundry a Day

Without fail, I follow this tip every day as one of my top clean house tips!

One load of laundry a day keeps the laundry at bay! When you wake up, go to the laundry room and put a load in. Start your morning off right by checking off your second item from your home chores list.

Instead of thinking about doing laundry or realizing you’re missing the shirt you wanted to wear, it’s already done! This is a game-changer concept, especially for parents. Additionally, you do not want to end up with a pile of laundry.

To maintain a neat house, follow the one-load-a-day rule.

3. Unload & Load Dishwasher

Among all the household tips I have, one crucial one is to do your dishes. Whether you have a dishwasher or not, the dishes need to be done and put away. Do the dishes as soon as you finish your meal.

If you have hand-washed a giant pot, grab a dishtowel and dry it off, then put it away!

Dishes sitting can cause a foul odor and bacterial growth. It can make washing them harder with caked-on messes. I swear by this dish sponge to get all the food from the dishes.

4. Wipe Down Kitchen Counters & Sink

A chore that needs to be done after every meal is wiping down the counters, tables, and sink. This is a simple household chore that can be completed in a minute or two. This makes your home look tidy, but it’s also great for preventing the buildup of germs.

How to disinfect kitchen countertops

  • Step 1: Use a microfiber cloth with a bit of Dawn dish soap and hot water to remove crumbs, stains, and grease
  • Step 2: Wipe down the counter with the rinsed-out microfiber cloth to remove any soap residue
  • Step 3: Using a multipurpose spray or a granite spray, depending on your counter type, spray down the counter and work in the cleaning product with a paper towel

One of the things with household chores is learning to clean as you go. This habit makes all the difference in how to clean faster. If you have less mess to begin with, you spend less time cleaning.

As you begin to incorporate these daily household chores, you will spend less overall time cleaning.

5. Sweep High Traffic Zones

A quick sweep can go a long way. You don’t need to vacuum every day, but sweeping daily is an essential household chore. Dirt and debris get tracked into our house every time we come home.

One of my top house tips on how to clean faster is this next one. It is if your floors are regularly maintained in high-traffic areas, when the time comes to do a thorough vacuum and mop, it takes significantly less time.

6. Wipe Down Bathroom

Under my bathroom sinks, I keep Windex, a multipurpose bathroom spray, and a few microfiber cloths. After your nighttime toothbrushing, wipe down your bathroom QUICKLY. This is supposed to be fast and easy. Remove any toothpaste residue on the mirror, hair, or stains in the sink.

I don’t need to scrub my toilet daily because I use this miracle product. Saves me a lot of time and keeps my bathrooms smelling fresh between cleanings.

7. Sort Mail & Packages

One household chore that is often overlooked is sorting your mail and packages. Not just opening them and throwing them down onto the counter or the ground.

If you received clothes in the mail, try them on as soon as possible. If you are sending them back, repack them and place them at your door to take to the mail the next day. Do not let packages and mail linger in your home.

8. Add Freshness to Rooms

A fun household chore is maintaining a pleasant house scent. The first thing many people notice when entering a home is the smell. Here are my top recommendations on how to add freshness to your home:

  • Open windows to bring in fresh air (if too cold out, just crack a window for a couple of minutes)
  • Use an aromatherapy diffuser (I love the sweet orange scent, so citrusy and fresh)
  • Fresh-cut flowers with good scents (lilac, roses, and lavender all have a great smell)
  • Candles (these are my favorite)

9. Take Out Trash & Recycling

A daily household chore that needs to be managed is sorting trash, recycling, and organics. This chore takes a few minutes and helps in so many ways. Reduces odors in the home, prevents pests, and minimizes mess.

The worst is when you go to the garbage can, and it is completely overflowing. Do not let it get to that point. Your kitchen garbage should be taken out daily. Bathrooms and other rooms’ garbage can be monitored on a weekly basis.

10. Declutter

I’m going to let you in on a secret: the secret of how to clean faster is sorting clutter daily. Everything has a place! Keeping your house clean starts with putting everything in its proper place.

When you try to clean on top of stuff, it doesn’t work. You need to put everything away first.

A daily 10-minute decluttering is an essential household chore to do because the routine of picking things up creates a neat and tidy home. I do this after my toddler is asleep and before I wind down for the evening.

11. Prep for a Better Tomorrow

A chore that often gets neglected is prepping for the next day. Spending a few minutes on a better tomorrow sets you up for success. You can reduce your morning stress, set a positive tone for the day, and improve mental clarity all by a little prep work the night before.

How to Prep for a Better Tomorrow

  • Tip Number One: Make your lunch and fill your water bottle
  • Tip Number Two: Pick out the clothes you will wear tomorrow
  • Tip Number Three: Check in with your calendar and to-do list. I use Apple Calendar and have a notes app with a To-Do list. I will forget everything if I don’t write it down somewhere.

Make Household Chores Easy

A total game changer in recent years for household chores is a cleaning caddy. I have all my supplies in one. It makes it so easy to grab and pop into a room.

Large Cleaning Caddy

Must have to keep on top of your household chores. Holds many bottles and supplies. You can fit your entire cleaning routine in here!

I highly recommend going with a plastic cleaning caddy over a cloth one. Cleaning supplies drip and leak; it’s so easy to wash down a plastic caddy.
