Do you feel like you don’t even know where to start when it comes to your health? It’s easy to get caught up in the web of health information on the internet, but it’s challenging to find simple, straightforward health tips.
I’ve created a list of EASY and simple health tips to support you in your journey to improve your well-being. These are doable things you can do every day, even with a jam-packed schedule.
Small changes can yield significant long-term results. If you’re tired of starting over on your health journey, the following 11 simple health tips are realistic and can be easily incorporated into your daily routine. Try one today!
Simple Health Tips
1. Hydrate with Water
I know you have heard this one before. Drink your water. Hydration is essential for your digestive system, skin, and overall energy levels. When you don’t drink enough water, it’s like a car without enough gas. You need it to function correctly.
Make an effort every day to meet your daily water requirement. This is plain water with no additives. To determine how much water to drink, try using this water calculator.
One thing that really helps me ensure I meet my daily requirements is my emotional support water bottle. We go everywhere together.
Tip: If you don’t love water, try adding mint or lemon for a little more flavor.
2. Morning Stretch
When you get out of bed, try lying on the ground and stretching out for a few minutes. These can be gentle movements to get your blood flowing. Stretching out your body is an excellent way to start your morning on a healthy note.
Here is a great 5-minute video on simple morning stretches you can do, instructed by Jessica Valant.
3. Caffeine and Sugar in Moderation
When it comes to simple health tips, I think it is best to avoid “never do this” or “never eat that”. It is unrealistic to put that kind of pressure on yourself. Instead, think to yourself, I can have everything, but in moderation, and be mindful of what you are eating.
Maybe it’s the afternoon, you’ve had a few coffees, but your body is telling you it needs energy. Try drinking some water instead of having another coffee. Moderation isn’t about completely stopping yourself from eating the item, but instead having a portion rather than unlimited servings.
If you have a sweet tooth, I find that avoiding your craving often leads to consuming more sugar. Eat the real thing, enjoy it, then move on to incorporating nutrient-dense food into your day.
4. Eat Whole Foods
Eating whole foods can help you meet your fibre, mineral, and nutrient daily requirements. Whole foods can also make you feel satisfied and full longer. This can support your energy levels throughout the day.
If you are unsure of what whole foods are, check out my grocery store list below. These are staples that I love to have on hand in the fridge, freezer, and cupboard.
Looking for some whole foods inspiration to cook? Try out this cookbook. There are weekday healthy, whole-food meals that are both delicious and nutritious.
One whole food recipe I make for my toddler is popsicles with plain Greek yogurt, a ripe banana, whole milk, and frozen berries. I add all of these ingredients to my blender and then pour them into this popsicle container. They taste amazing and are incredibly easy to make, making them a great healthy snack to have on hand.
Try to avoid consuming processed food and prioritize whole foods as much as possible.
5. Fresh Air
Take a moment in your day to enjoy some fresh air. Getting fresh air can have lots of health benefits. Whether that is a cup of coffee on your patio in the morning, walking your dog, or playing with your kids at the park. This is one of the simplest yet effective health tips.
If the weather isn’t lovely, try opening a window to get some air into your home. Having fresh air in your day can increase oxygen flow to the brain. Fresh air to the brain can be a mood stabilizer. If you are having a bad day, get outside. This can be a game-changer for your health journey.
6. Move Your Body
When it comes to simple health tips, no list would be complete without incorporating some physical activity for your body. The best part of moving your body is that you get to decide what works for you.
Perhaps it’s as simple as choosing to walk to work instead of driving, taking an Apple fitness class on your phone, using the stairs, or even practicing a gentle yoga flow. Think about what you can incorporate into your everyday life.
When it comes to any health tip, I want to say that being rigid does not work for many people in the long term. IE – If I don’t hit 20K steps today, I’m screwed!
You need to be flexible with yourself. For example, if it’s a Friday and you plan to watch a movie later, consider taking a walk during your lunch break, as you’ll likely be sitting on the couch all night.
7. Cleaning Routine
Don’t underestimate the power of having a clean home. This can have a profound impact on your mental well-being. If you are feeling overwhelmed by the mess in your house, try cleaning it up. This simple health tip will alleviate a lot of stress. When you have mental clarity, it is easier to implement your other simple health tips.
I’ve got a super-easy-to-follow checklist for household chores over on this post. It shows you what to clean daily, weekly, monthly, and so on. Getting organized on what needs to be cleaned can reduce the time spent on what I like to call “cleaning contemplation.”
8. Consistency
One of the best simple health tips to follow is consistency. When you show up for yourself every day and put in the hard work, you will see results. You will look better and feel better. This requires discipline and dedication to your health habits.
What does consistency look like? If you plan to drink a glass of water every morning before coffee, commit to it and stick to your plan.
If you have had a weekend of poor health choices, don’t worry or restrict yourself the next week. Follow your simple health tips and get back on track. You can do this.
9. Limit Screen Time
Does what you are doing on your phone bring you joy and peace? Or does it evoke thoughts of feeling inadequate, not having enough money, or not being good-looking, etc.? Phone addiction is rampant and distorts our sense of reality.
Limiting screen time and not being constantly attached to our devices can open up new creative opportunities. Trying that hobby you’ve always wanted to or picking up an old one, feeling productive, spending quality family time, or planning that trip you’ve always wanted to take, there is so much to do in the world!
Activities to Try Instead of Screen Time
- Reading
- Drawing or painting
- Knitting, crocheting, or sewing
- Listening to a podcast or an audiobook
- Crosswords or Sudoku
- Baking or cooking
- Gardening
- Working out
- Board games or card games
- Going for a walk
10. Sleep Hygiene
What is sleep hygiene? Sleep hygiene refers to your habits related to sleeping. Do you have a regular sleep schedule or nighttime routine? Do you make your room optimal for sleeping in?
Maintaining good sleep hygiene creates a better opportunity for a restful night’s sleep. A simple health tip I love is getting a great night of sleep. Take a look at the sleep hygiene habits below. Where could you improve?
Sleep Hygiene Habits
- Consistent sleep schedule
- Bedtime routine
- Try to avoid daytime napping
- Screens off one hour before sleeping
- Use blackout curtains or a sleep mask
- Avoid caffeine 8 hours before bed (yes, chocolate has caffeine)
- Use a sound machine if noise is an issue
Trying to incorporate some or all of these sleep hygiene habits can tremendously affect how you sleep. Give one a try today and see the impact on your health when you get a full night’s rest.
11. Do Something that Makes You Laugh
Yes, laughing is good for your health. It can trigger the release of endorphins (the good feeling chemicals) that boost your mood. Having time to let go and laugh can change your whole day.
Whether it’s a favorite movie, a hilarious podcast, or chatting with a good friend on FaceTime, laughing can help calm you down. It can also help break you away from negative thought patterns.
Who doesn’t love a good laugh? When I am looking for a good laugh, I listen to Giggly Squad.
